Engineering software,
built and shipped.

Thermal engineering is full of problems that deserve better than a spreadsheet. These are the tools I build to solve them — HVAC&R design and property software on the OTS R&D workbench, and a factor-based market research stack of my own. Everything here is live software you can open right now.

OTS R&D

The Engineering Workbench

As Software Engineering Manager at OTS R&D, I build and lead the engineering software behind the OTS Workbench — browser-based design and analysis tools for the HVAC&R industry, grounded in ASHRAE and IAPWS reference data. All seven are free and need no account.

Cycle design

Refrigerant Cycle Designer

Solve vapor-compression and heat-pump cycles across 15+ system topologies and 125+ refrigerants, including 148 blends, with the P-h chart updating as you work.

System design

Air System Designer

Lay out air handlers end to end — cooling and heating coils, mixing boxes, energy recovery and fans — and watch each process draw itself on a live psychrometric chart.

Moist air

Psychrometric Chart

Plot state points and read every moist-air property off them. Draw process and SHR lines, mix airstreams, overlay ASHRAE comfort zones, switch SI/IP, export SVG or PNG.

Refrigerants

Log P-h Diagram

Put state points and whole cycles on a log pressure-enthalpy diagram for 60+ refrigerants, and compare two refrigerants on the same axes before committing to one.

Properties

Fluid Property Calculator

Thermodynamic and transport properties on demand: moist air to ASHRAE, 125+ refrigerants, water and steam to IAPWS-95/IF97, and 25 glycols and brines.

Utility

Engineering Unit Converter

NIST-traceable conversion across 30 categories, including the ones general converters get wrong — cooling tons, BTU/h, CFM, GPM, thermal conductivity, viscosity.

Heat transfer

Dimensionless Numbers

Reynolds, Prandtl, Nusselt, Grashof, Rayleigh, Biot, Mach and 15 more — 22 in all, each returned with an interpretation of the flow regime rather than a bare number.

More on the OTS R&D Portal

Beyond the workbench: licensed software downloads, the CoilDesigner® add-ins, SAE LCCP, hardware and training materials.

Personal R&D

Stocks & Markets

A factor-based equity research stack I built for myself, running on apps.michaellippy.com — .NET compiled to WebAssembly, with a point-in-time backtester behind it. Four of these are open to everyone; the two that burn paid market data need an account.

Open

Interest Rates

The Treasury yield curve and the fed funds rate on one axis, from FRED, with NBER recessions shaded — back to 1954 if you want the whole picture.

Open

Macro Dashboard

Growth, inflation, labor and credit from FRED — every series quoted in percent, with recessions shaded and major market episodes marked.

Open

Leading Indicators

Credit spreads, the yield curve, financial conditions and the surveys that turn before the economy does.

Open

Investing Glossary

Plain-English definitions for every ratio, factor, indicator and backtest term the screener uses — written so the numbers elsewhere on the site mean something.

Sign-in

Stock Screener

Ranks a basket on a weighted blend of value, momentum, quality, gross profitability, trend and low-volatility factors, then backtests the blend point-in-time.

Sign-in

Signals

Re-ranks a saved strategy against what you actually hold and produces the buy, hold and sell list — using the identical ranking the backtester replays.

The screener and signals run against a paid market-data feed, so those two are invite-only. Everything else on this page is open.
